Cushioned Lap Desk. With a soft cushion filling, the portable lap desk gives the ability to work and write in almost any location. You have a number of options for the cushion stuffing. Shavings from planing down the 3/4" starting stock to 1/2" to make the top works perfectly for stuffing the cushion; another alternative for the stuffing that works well was shavings from ‘hard’ Styrofoam, made by taking a ‘Surform’ tool or rasp and grating the material and collecting it in a paper grocery bag. You could just as easily use rice, dried peas, or the poly-beads the hobby store sells for stuffing beanbags. The finished size of the cushion is 21/2" x 10" x 15". It is designed to be 2" smaller than the top so that routing the stopped rabbet will require only one setup on the router table or router edge guide.
